Scholarship Benefits

The LExS scholarship is a gateway to world class education and covers the entirety of the study program.

It offers three award levels.

  1. €10,000 towards the tuition fee
  2. €15,000 towards the tuition fee
  3. Covers the total tuition fee, excluding the statutory tuition fee

It’s important to note that while the LExS is comprehensive, it doesn’t cover the entire tuition fee.

Recipients from Non-EEA countries must still provide evidence of adequate funds for their student visa/residence permit application.

Eligibility Criteria

Nationality Requirements:

Non-EEA/EFTA Passport Holders: Applicants must hold a passport from a country outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

Exemption Programs: Certain programs, such as LLM Advanced Studies and MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, have exceptions to the non-EEA/EFTA rule.

UK Nationals Post-Brexit: UK students are now considered non-EEA/EFTA passport holders for LExS eligibility, with exceptions for those registered in the Netherlands before January 1, 2021.

Academic Requirements:

Applicants must have demonstrated outstanding academic performance in their previous educational programs, typically ranking within the top 10% of graduates.

No documentation of ranking is required; however, this information emphasizes the level of competitiveness.


Recipients are required to confirm acceptance of the scholarship’s Terms and Conditions in writing before it is awarded.


Certain conditions disqualify applicants, including those who have completed a Master’s degree at Leiden University (exceptions apply), those pursuing specific programs, and those who do not meet nationality requirements.

Application Procedure

Application for Admission:

Apply online for admission to the Master’s program at Leiden University.

Ensure the application is submitted well before the LExS deadline.

Checking Eligibility for LExS:

After submitting the admission application, navigate to the Scholarships section to check LExS eligibility.

LExS Application:

Indicate the intention to apply for LExS.

Upload a PDF file (max. 500 words) containing the LExS motivation letter, explaining why the applicant should be considered for the award.

Submission and Changes:

Submit the scholarship application before the LExS deadline.

No changes can be made once the application is submitted.

Multiple Program Applications:

If applying for multiple study programs, submit a separate LExS application and motivation letter for each.

Late Applications:

Late applications won’t be considered, and it’s the student’s responsibility to ensure both applications are submitted on time.

Selection Process

1. Faculty selection committees nominate LExS recipients within six weeks of the LExS deadline.

2. All applicants receive an email about their LExS application status at the end of November (for February programs) or end of April (for September programs).
